After more than 20 years of booking private balcony events on Bourbon Street, I’ve noticed something that most event planning guides never mention. Both can comfortably handle a group this size, but they offer very different nights, and knowing the difference will help you choose the one that actually fits your group.

Cornet: The Upscale Choice with the Biggest Balcony on Bourbon Street

Cornet sits in the 700 block of Bourbon Street and has the largest balcony on the entire street, a wraparound, covered, gas lantern-lit gallery balcony that gives your guests sweeping views in both directions. The 2nd floor alone comfortably accommodates 30 to 300 guests, and the entire restaurant can host 600+ guests. The 2nd floor can be divided into 3 separate rooms, with an adjacent balcony, for smaller groups. We have something to accommodate groups of all sizes.

For groups that need even more room, we can connect to the adjacent Cantina and expand capacity to 700+ guests.

Cornet has a more polished, restaurant-style feel. It’s the venue I tend to recommend for:

• Wedding parties, corporate groups, and conference attendees who want a Bourbon Street experience without losing a sense of refinement
• Groups pairing dinner with their balcony time
• Class or family reunions, fraternity formals, milestone celebrations, and crowds that span a wide age range

If your group wants the energy of Bourbon Street with a bit more polish, Cornet is usually the answer.

Prohibition: Live Music Energy for Groups Who Want to Dance

Prohibition is in the 300 block of Bourbon Street and has the feel of a live music bar with nightclub energy. The second floor accommodates 50 to 200 guests, both floors together accommodate 400+ guests, and when we expand into the adjacent courtyard, capacity grows to 700 to 800+ guests.

Prohibition is the venue I point groups toward when they want to move. Live music, a bar with real nightclub energy as well as the traditional French Quarter courtyard and a Bourbon Street balcony that puts your group right in the center of the action. It’s a favorite for:

• Corporate events
• Big milestone birthday parties or student groups
• Any group whose plan for the night includes anything from dancing to game viewing to simply enjoying cocktails and conversation.

Matching Your Group’s Personality to the Right Venue

Over the years, I’ve learned that the “right” venue has less to do with the size of the group and more to do with what kind of night they’re after. A 150-person corporate group and a 150-person wedding weekend are going to want completely different experiences, even though the headcount is identical.

Weddings and conference groups tend to gravitate toward Cornet. There’s something about the restaurant setting and the wraparound balcony that feels appropriate for a group that’s been in business meetings all day but still wants to let loose and enjoy New Orleans. It gives them permission to have fun without feeling like they’ve left “professional” behind entirely.

Social groups, reunions, and big birthday celebrations seeking a bar atmosphere lean toward Prohibition. These groups want the live music, the bar energy, and a balcony that feels like it’s in the center of the action. When a celebratory group seeking a live band asks me which venue I’d pick for them, Prohibition is usually my answer, because it matches the energy they’re already bringing with them.

Part of what I do, hosting close to 95 percent of these events myself, is help groups figure out which feels actually matches what they’re picturing for their night. A lot of people don’t realize how different these two venues feel until I walk them through it, and getting that match right is a big part of what makes the night work.

This location gets the most referrals and requests from people who have attended small parties with us, especially from gentlemen returning to New Orleans with a different group of friends for a bachelor party. It’s the perfect Bourbon Street balcony for small groups for Mardi Gras.
